Help provide hard-working & deserving students the tools needed to succeed in today’s digital world, one laptop at a time.
On July 15, 2022, Computers With a Cause, a local non-profit formed to help provide hard-working and deserving students the tools needed to succeed in today's digital work, donated 15 laptops to the St. Julian Devine Community Center. The computers will be available to students, families, and community residents at the center to access educational programs, job trainings, basic needs, financial resources, and telehealth.
Ericka Plater, TCCC Board Member and Chair of the Community Leaders Council; City of Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg; Dr. Bobby Baker, founder of the Dr. Bobby and Julia Baker Foundation; and Laurie Yarbrough, Director of Recreation for the City of Charleston, held a press conference announcing the donation and presented the computers to the community center.
Mayor Tecklenburg joined us for the festivities. Everyone involved enjoyed a very special day.

The Ronald McDonald House in Charleston, SC is located across the street from the new Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital at MUSC. We were advised of their need for families and staff to have some new computers as their existing ones were quite old and lacking in current technology.

Computers with a Cause makes a difference in our community by recognizing worthy students who would otherwise have little access to the tools necessary to succeed in our modern world. Computers with a Cause is delighted to announce that our most recent recipient is an excellent student who has distinguished herself academically and through her involvement with the Scouts. It is our belief that today’s gift of a computer will help Zoey F. further her educational goals, and give her the leg up that all students deserve.
Pictured above are BSA staff members, Debra Everitt and Kendra Barrett, along with our very own Dr. Bobby Baker, who is presenting the computer on behalf of Computers with a Cause. The computer was delivered to Zoey at the Coastal Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America’s Low Country District in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Pictured above are Zoey F. of Troop 222, Scout Executive Jason Smith, alongside, Scoutmaster Michele Davis and Jacquie Gutierrez. Jacquie Gutierrez proudly recommended Zoey and we appreciate her recommendation.
Dr. Baker has been volunteering with the BSA as Scoutmaster, volunteer and board member for many years, and Dr. Baker’s wife, Julie, has served as a volunteer and cub scout den leader. Both of their sons are Eagle Scouts. The Bakers are happy to give back to their community through the Dr. Bobby and Julie Baker Foundation, and Computers with a Cause is pleased to support qualified scouts through their charitable endeavors.
By working with several non-profit organizations, local schools, and public education departments, we help identify students who have demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and deserve an opportunity to succeed in today’s digital world. Some of these students have overcome many barriers in their lives and our organization strives to help them remain on track to succeed in life! We believe in changing the lives of these students, one laptop computer at a time.
Our organization was formed after witnessing so many students who have worked very hard to succeed academically, but do not have access to the resources that would allow them to own their own laptop computer. Many of these students have provided years of community service to their churches and other organizations. They are often in the top of their class and have taken several Honors and AP classes. This is despite their many social, family and financial hardships that they have had to live with.
We want them to have an opportunity to attend college or trade school and hope to eliminate another obstacle in their lives by providing them with their own laptop computer. We need for them to know that there are many people and organizations, such as ours, that care about them and their future.
"Its less about computers and more about providing
access to essential resources. Computers with a
Cause is helping provide Kids On Point students
with technology that is necessary to achieve
academic success, and our students have greatly
benefited from their support," say Lauren Herterich,
Executive Director of Kids On Point
Your tax deductible contribution will help our local students close the GAP by providing the
